Burgundy 2021 Supplement

DOMAINE JEAN-MARC PILLOT - CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET Situated just off the main road outside Chagny, Jean-Marc Pillot, cousin of Jacques Carillon, is still a reasonably new grower to the Farthinghoe family. His Chassagne-Montrachet Domaine makes classical, pure, very stylishwhite and redwines. Jean-Marc has been crafting his trade since 1991, withhis Chassagne- Montrachets, which areworld-class and verywell known amongst Burgundy lovers. His redsmust alsoNOT be missed, they are sensational, and interestingly during our tasting, it was remarked that the Chassagne Clos St. Jean reds are superior to the whites inmany cases. Let us not forget that until the 1970s most of the appellation was planted with Pinot Noir and we feel that the reds are definitely on the up. Jean-Marc’s son Antonin joined his father at the Domaine in 2019 and presented the 2021s to us at the Domaine. It was sad to see that their yields are down by 50% overall but they havemanaged to boost their numbers a little with a newly developed négociant business. All of the Domaine wines are organically farmed and their use of new oak has been reduced heavily for this vintage. We really liked the wines andwe were particularly impressed with the Chassagne Clos St. Jean rouge which was opulent but balanced.
