Burgundy 2021 Supplement

DOMAINE CHANDONDE BRIAILLES - SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE It is a pleasure to watch growers that we have worked with for many years go from strength to strength. Chandon de Briailles are a great example of this, when we started buying from them the wines were good but now they are truly excellent. This vintage with its cool freshness really plays to their house style. We were delighted to taste with Claude de Nicolay, who was excited to show us their full range as usual. Their style is one of transparent elegance, continually improving vineyard techniques in pursuit of finesse, such as ploughing by horse to prevent root compaction. They employedwhole bunch fermentation to encourage clarity and definition, and in pursuit of minimal extraction, they pressed gently, with one punch down and manually pumped over the cap using buckets to be as gentle as possible. The wines are then aged in minimal new oak – maximum 10% for whites, 15% for Village reds, 20% for 1er Cru and 25% for the Grand Cru sites. A true labour of love bringingwonderful finesse and elegance across their appellations. We highly recommend investing in their wines this year.

REDBURGUNDY CÔTEDEBEAUNE

SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE, AUX FOURNEAUX Blended across the Fourneaux climat: two thirds 1er Cru, one third Village. Clay soil holds the water so grapes gently ripen. On the nose this is open, bright, juicy, sweet raspberry and blueberry. They do carbonic maceration on 50% of the grapes which comes through. The palate is sweet, juicy, grippy yet open. A sense of lightness and elegance. Crunchy, fine, finessed. Creamy and elegant with herbal hints. The finish is long fine and pure, a very SAVIGNY-LES-BEAUNE, 1ERCRULES LAVIÈRES South facing middle slope of Lavières, planted in 1956. Poor soil, light clay over limestone. Very floral, pure and fine. Not as immediately generous, but very pretty and silky with violet, and blueberry. The palate shows bright, floral elegance, with a savoury touch, saline and mineral. Powdery tannins, very fine, floral and elegant. 2026-2034 £310 - £340 / 6BOTTLES 2027-2035 £315 - £345 / 3MAGNUMS 10% new oak, 70% whole bunches. A steeper east-facing slope, poorer chalkier soil compared to Lavières. Best of their 1er Cru. Serious, intense and age worthy. The palate is spicy, intense, and a touchmuted. Opening up there is a big lift of fine fruit, intense, spicy, high energy, saline and mineral. It is incredibly impressive, structured and very long to finish. 2029-2037 £350 - £380 / 6BOTTLES 2030-2039 £355 - £390 / 3MAGNUMS 2030-2039 £290 - £315 / 1 DOUBLEMAGNUM good start. 2025-2032 £255 - £275 / 6BOTTLES PERNAND-VERGELESSES, 1ERCRU ÎLEDE VERGELESSES

CORTONLES BRESSANDESGRANDCRU Up the hill fromMarechaudes, from four plots: two more iron rich and two with more limestone. It always needs time. It is more complex and more austere with herbal and eucalyptus, lifted fruit. The palate is ethereal fruit, grippy andmineral structure. Extremely fine-grained yet present, structured tannin. The long finish effortlessly moving through layers supported by pretty fruit. 2032-2041 £835 - £905 / 6BOTTLES CORTONLECLOSDUROI GRANDCRU 100% whole bunch fermentation, from the top of the hill, white soil and sand. Longer than Bressandes, the aromatics are floral and silky. It is fine, pretty and bright on the nose with rose petal and bramble. The class is evident from this ethereal aroma. The palate is a step up: a massive hit of defined red fruit, rose petal, violet, spice, cherry, raspberry, incredible length, sweetness in the core then big grippy structure. Insane length, and does not fade. Quite possibly the wine of the vintage from what we’ve tasted? Massive power but so balanced, fine and fresh. Full 3minute finish. Wow. 2033-2045 £1,080 - £1,175 / 6BOTTLES
