Burgundy 2021 Supplement

DOMAINEHENRI GOUGES - NUITS ST. GEORGES The Gouges wines of old used to take 20 years to come around. In recent vintages this changed, especially with 2021 where they havemade a concerted effort tomakemore approachablewines. Antoine is constantly experimenting on small plots in the vineyard, planting nitrogen fixing legumes in the rows, testing his results year-on-year. In Fontaine Jacquinot his experiments with biodynamics are showing great results. In the chai the gravity-fed winery is excelling in refining the tannin across the cuvées, reducing the extraction process. Gregory has also begun to decrease the age of his used barrels to create a more uniform micro oxygenation process across his cuveés prior to blending. All in all, things couldn’t be healthier, and we, as long-term supporters couldn’t be happier! We think the wines are of supreme quality and perhaps even a tad undervalued - especially for such a storied estate - one of the first to estate-bottle their wine. Henri Gouges was a formidable character, nicknamed the Gendarme de Nuits, as he was always on the hunt for those blending grapes fromoutside the region. Hewould be pleased to see his grandsons’ current offerings. For further reading on the estate, we implore you to read Neal Martin’s fun and excellent retrospective in Vinous.
