DOMAINE DUCLOS FRANTIN - NUITS ST. GEORGES Wewere sadly unable to visit theDomaine this year, butwehave ahistory of talking to and tastingwithAlain Serveau, the estate’s technical director of some 25 years. He is aman clearly of the soil that he works, having been born in Nuits St. Georges, a stone’s throw from the Bichot winery. He is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate and has given us a deep understanding of how the Domaine works. Clos Frantin is owned by a négociant house, but Albert Bichot is kept separate to the main house. It allows it to function as a small Domaine yet the financial clout of Bichot has allowed them to own plots in some of the very finest terroirs - suchas owning thebiggest parcel inMalconsorts. Frantinbecamebiodynamic certified in2014after 10years of experimentation. Alain explained that a doctor gives a full consultation before giving a prescription: he needed to understand the soils and parcels before making changes. He also wanted full buy in from the vineyard teams to understand theWHY of what they are doing not just theHOW. The prescription certainly seems to be working, with a host of excellent wines.
