LACHAPELLED’AUSONE 75% Cabernet franc, 25% Cabernet sauvignon. 20 months in barrel. An attractive nose of dark bramble fruit. The palate follows suit with some expressive and ripe dark berry fruit. The tannin is light and ripe, quite fine giving just a bit of grip in the top of themouth. The finish has excellent acidity and ends with a dry, dusty fruit note. Quite approachable and a real crowd pleaser. DRINK: 2028 - 2044 £650 - £795 / 6BOTTLES WA91-93 CHÂTEAULE PETITCHEVAL 60% Merlot, 33% Cabernet sauvignon, 7% Cabernet franc. A higher volume than usual was made this year. The nose is very serious and closed, it is very dark and inky with black plum, wood smoke and wet stone. The palate is focused on some very dark fruit and has an umami, saline finish. The inky, rounded tannin is just ripe enough and it delivers a gentle grip at the end of the palate. DRINK: 2026 - 2040 £650 - £765 / 6BOTTLES WA89-91 CHÂTEAUFIGEAC, 1ERGRANDCRUCLASSÉ B Cabernet sauvignon35%, Cabernet franc 35%,Merlot 30%. 15-18 months in barrel, 100% new oak. A very elegant and attractive nose shows notes of ripe plum, savoury notes, flowers and lots of ripe berries. This is generous, complex and concentrated. The palate is fleshy and precise, a well made wine with a good round mouthfeel and the finish is long and structured with rounded grippy tannin. The acidity is very well measured here, it really helps the fruit sing and the wine carries the new oak well. A highbrow, complex wine which really highlights the strength of the right bank this year. Very classy. DRINK: 2032 - 2048 £850 - £995 / 6BOTTLES WA94-97 CHÂTEAUPAVIE, 1ERGRANDCRUCLASSÉA “The 2021 Pavie is a wine of tremendous potential. Naturally, it shows themoremid-weight style of the year and yet there is plenty of depth as well as energy that starts to emerge with a bit of time in the glass. Bright saline notes shape the wine while extending the finish and adding so much drive. The 2021 is shaping up to be a very special wine. CHÂTEAUL’ANGELUS, 1ERGRANDCRUCLASSÉA 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet franc. A punchy nose of dusty dark fruit, quite closedwith a big savoury note, minerality and mocha. The palate has a fleshy, juicy core, very fine, well worked tannins and the alcohol is well integrated. The finish has a moderate freshness, it is savoury with abundant new oak notes. DRINK: 2032 - 2048 £1,385 - £1,725 / 6BOTTLES WA94-96+ CHÂTEAUCHEVAL BLANC, 1ERGRANDCRUCLASSÉ A 53% Cabernet franc, 42 % Merlot, 5% Cabernet sauvignon. 16+months inbarrel, 100%newoak. Adark, plushplummy nose, with a little floral lift, intense savoury notes and a hint of cigar box. Some red fruit coming through on the palate which shows blackberries, inky medium tannins which are firm and grippy. Medium bodied and cool thanks to the limestone influence. The acidity is quite prominent on the long finish with smoke and mineral notes. This is a very cool classic style. DRINK: 2032 - 2050 £2,095 - £2,585 / 6BOTTLES WA95-97 CHÂTEAUAUSONE, 1ERGRANDCRUCLASSÉA 65% Cabernet franc, 35% Merlot. A beautiful ruby colour with a hint of purple on the rim. Quite a flashy, suave nose of new oak and opulent fruit with sweet spice and pencil lead. Complex and well-constructed. The palate is packed with plush red, black and a hint of blue fruit. The tannin is fine and well worked. The finish has a very good freshness. A full body and some grip on the finish. Not as savoury and saline as others but very elegant and inviting in its ripeness and fresh acidity. A beautifully made wine, great ripeness and effortless balance. Very good.
