CHÂTEAULÉOVILLE-POYFERRÉ, 2ÈMECRU 60% Cabernet sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 9% Cabernet franc, 5% Petit verdot. 80% new oak from 15 different coopers. Attractive, ripe and perfumed nose with a bit of cedar from the new oak. Inviting and classy. The palate is intense with lots of dark cassis and bramble fruit. Soft and unctuous. The tannin is very fine but the structure is bold here thanks to the gentle but long extraction. The finish is long and inky with an excellent freshness. True to the classic style of St. Julien this year. DRINK: 2032 - 2046 £395 - £475 / 6BOTTLES WA93-94+ CHÂTEAUDUCRU-BEAUCAILLOU, 2ÈMECRU 98% Cabernet, 2% Merlot. 100% new oak for 18 months in barrel. An exuberant nose of bright dark berry fruit and bramble. Hints of herb, goodmineral note. Palate is dark and dense and the fruit is incredibly concentrated. The finish is packed with dark fine tannin the freshness just shines through with plenty of smoke and spice. A big, bold wine which should keep well and reward on the long term. CHÂTEAULÉOVILLE-LASCASES, 2ÈMECRU 80% Cabernet sauvignon, 15% Cabernet franc, 5% Merlot. 85% new oak. A generous ripe nose, with plenty of dark fruit. Crunchy leafy cassis. Cedar, wood smoke and lots of graphite. The palate has lots of juicy dark fruit, which stands up well to the tannic structure. The tannin itself is very fine and inky which makes for quite an elegant mouthfeel. The finish is long with good classic freshness. Serious elegance and finesse.
